Letter from Betty Nielsen to Dallas Hearn:
November 8, 1961
Dear Dallas:
I, too, have been wondering about the rings. My mother had 2 of the opals which she gave to Aunt Marietta with the request that I have the ring when she passed on. I suppose you know the original ring belonged to Grandma E. and she divided it and Marietta restored it. I know she got opals from you and Ruth too.
Aunt Marietta had on both rings when Rolf and I visited Chicago in October, 1959. I remarked on how nice her hands looked and she said the opal ring would some day be mine. I wrote to the home and to Dorothy about a week after the funeral and asked about the opal ring. The home answered immediately and said that Dorothy B. [Brace] had asked for the opal ring and they had given it to her. Miss McCormick said it was the only ring that they had found. As Dorothy had been so faithful in Aunt marietta;s illness, I decided to forget it. Dorothy Brace answered after several months. I shall enclose her letter but I would like to have it back. NOW I am sure that the ring means a great deal to her and I shall never mention it again. It was a family keepsake and I am sorry it got away.
I have no idea what could have happened to the diamond. I don't think marietta would have sold it. She would not have had any special expenses since we saw her in late 1959. Her medical expenses were paid by insurance and the home. She received $25 spending money from the home. We sent money from my mother when she passed on and Rolf and I sent $25 3-4 times a year. While this isn't much, I can't think she would use for very much. After getting Dorothy's letter, I wonder if she got the diamond too. I did not ask about the diamond ring when I wrote but I have been curious and wonder if there was some dirty work.
I wonder if someone should send for Marietta's truck. I hate to bother the home and it may be empty.
Mother and Marietta worked hard on the genalogy during the 1940's. Dorothy Brace, I believe, typed several copies of which I have one. I shall be glad to mail it to you to copy but I know Aunt Marietta had several copies and many other notes.
I am beginning to think if Marietta left any will, which I guess she didn't, no one would have found it. I hope you turn up some information.
